How to cut hair: A Guide for the Beginners?

If you are planning to become a hairstylist then you must go in for a professional course. This will teach you how to cut hair of various lengths, textures etc. You can also try doing experiments with the children in your family or your close friends so that you get hands on practice with it. You can try learning how to do trimming of the hair first. Later on, you can start giving proper haircuts.

As the first step to how to cut hair, first procure good quality stainless steel hair cutting equipment such as scissors, razor and razor blades. You also need to have other hair cutting gear like comb – fine and wide toothed, brushes, water spraying bottle, hair clips, curlers and a hair dryer to start with. You also need a place where you can give haircut to the people. This place should be clean and hygienic.

  • Make sure you have high-quality hair-cutting equipment, the most important being professional scissors for cutting hair. Other supplies might include a comb, a brush, a razor, hair clips, water spray, hair dryer and styling products. For just starting out, however, a pair of scissors, comb or brush, clips and water spray will suffice.
  • Request the client to first sit straight and not to move much, lest the hair cut might go awry.
  • Discuss with the client how much hair they want you to chop off. Stick to what they say. If you think otherwise, let them know your valuable suggestions. But don’t force them to accept what you say.
  • Remove the tangles in the hair by combing it gently. Wet the hair before you attempt cutting them, using a water spray. This is because wet hair elongates a little bit. You can also divide the hair into two or three portions to make the task easy for you.
  • One important thing to remember on how to cut hair is that you should start cutting the hair which is closest to the nape of the neck. Then slowly you can move upwards. You will need the help of hair clips to capture sections of hair, twisting them and pinning them upwards.

When in doubt as to how to cut hair, don’t panic. Try to closely follow hair styling book and learn from them as much as you can. Talk to hairstylists and try to convince them to take you under their wings as an apprentice. Alternately, you can follow these basic steps to make a start.
